Growing plants can be very fulfilling. You start by simply pressing seed to soil, but with continued nurturing you get to observe the germination and expansion of new green life. Your plant grows, matures and eventually completes its own cycle of life by producing fruit and then seed. If it is edible somewhere in that process you pick it and eat it. Other plants create beautiful flowers to decorate your yard or vase. Growing plants is both calming and exhilarating! Late Summer may not seem it, but September is a good time to plant seeds outdoors and herbs for your sunny window. We tend to think of planting season as being a springtime activity, however, many plants prefer (and it is part of their natural reproductive cycle) to be seeded in the ground for growth in cooler fall or early spring. Many medicinal plants are best planted in the fall. See the following link for a planting calendar for Portland: http://portlandnursery.com/docs/veggies/VeggieCalendar.pdf and this resource on growing tips for fall and winter crops: https://www.humeseeds.com/falwint.htm and this one on fall/winter medicinals https://www.horizonherbs.com/ftproot/Horizon_Herbs_Catalog_Fall_2014-15.pdf
Join us to plant your own seeds and share some food. I’ll have some bags of all natural potting soil and a variety of herb (medicinal + culinary), vegetable and flower seeds and starts, and reused plastic pots. Bring any seed you want to share (optional) or larger pots/planters to fill. If you want to fill larger pots please donate a couple/few dollars towards the price of the potting soil. You can start seeds in small pots in a warm window sill, then later transplant into the ground, or you can seed a patio container garden.
Also bring a dish, appetizer, desert or snack to share with the group. BBQ available. Bring any special beverages you want (age appropriate). We’ll nosh and contemplate the purposeful propagation of our new green friends. This will be mostly a back-yard event. There are patio benches, but you may want to bring your own lawn chair. There may be a fire pit if such is desired.
