Let’s take a Happy and Healthy Walk in the beautiful Marquam Nature Park near OHSU and downtown PDX. This walk will be about 3 miles long, 400 feet elevation gain, and will weave through the park on mostly dirt trails. The park is named after Philip Marquam, who was a Multnomah County judge in the 1860s and later served in the Oregon State Legislature. The Marquam Trail is part of Portland's 40-mile Loop. Red maples from the eastern United States shade the area around the shelter; these trees form a blazing grove in the fall. As we head up into the Marquam Gulch we enter the native forest of Douglas-fir, western hemlock, western red-cedar, big-leaf maple, and vine maple, and even some Pacific Yew, with urban invasives such as cherry-laurel, ivy, Armenian blackberry, English holly and herb-robert.
The path rises to cross the bed of an ephemeral stream and then reaches Marquam Hill Road and a water tank. Expect steep canyon hills with nicely graded dirt switchbacks (split-rail borders), so wear stabilizing active footwear such as sneakers, hiking boots or Tivas. Bring water or snacks as needed. Friendly dogs are welcome on leash. If you like bring info on a new diet fad or health tip to share and evaluate. This hike has many medicinal plants to potentially identify. Meet at 12 PM at the Marquam Shelter. View the inspiring mural project. There is free parking at the trailhead. From downtown, head south on Broadway and turn right at 6th Avenue. This will turn into Terwilliger and then Sam Jackson Park Road. There will be an uphill left turn on Sam Jackson Park, but do not follow it. Instead go straight towards the visible trailhead. (Basically go past the Shell station, the park is at the hairpin turn). If you want to carpool from some distant part of town, then leave a comment on the meet-up page and we’ll try to find someone going your way. The walk will take an hour to an hour and a half, but allow the two hour window due to any view breaks or general group lag. This should be fun! Let’s take a walk!
