Happy and Healthy Walk-Mt. Tabor

Let’s take a Happy and Healthy Walk in our own enchanting forested park and volcanic cinder cone in SE PDX.  This walk will be almost 3 miles long, 350 feet elevation gain, and will slowly wind around the small mountain.  We will pass by all three reservoirs and travel through the woods and fields, taking in the varied views, including reservoirs with their own little “medieval” castles. The Mt. Tabor volcanic butte was identified for a park in the 1880s due to its ideal elevation for a water distribution system, piping water some 25 miles from the Bull Run River watershed.  The Mount Tabor reservoirs and their gatehouses were artistically constructed (1894-1911) with reinforced concrete, designed to look like stonework by noted engineer Ernest L. Ransome and noted architect William M. Whidden. The peak of Mount Tabor rises about 436 ft above the surrounding land. The Tabor cinder cone is part of the Boring Lava Field, an extensive network of cinder cones and small shield volcanoes ranging from Boring, Oregon to southwest Washington, and dating to the Plio-Pleistocene era. The lava field has been extinct for over 300,000 years. The 196-acre park features a statue of The Oregonian editor and Scottish Rite Freemason, Harvey W. Scott. The larger-than-life statue was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, notable for sculptures on Mount Rushmore.

We probably won’t go all the way to the top, but we will go up to the restrooms.  The incline is not too severe mostly, but steady, and on mostly dirt trails, so wear stabilizing active footwear such as sneakers, hiking boots or Tevas.  Bring water or snacks as needed.  Friendly dogs are welcome on leash.  If you like bring info on a new diet fad or health tip to share and evaluate.  This hike has many medicinal plants to potentially identify.  Meet at 12 PM at the Park Entrance Sign at Se Salmon Street, off Se 60th. There is free parking on Se Salmon or nearby neighborhoods. From downtown, take Se Division St to Se 60th st.  Turn left on 60th.  Turn right on Se. Salmon St, then park on the street before entering the park.  If you want to carpool from some distant part of town, then leave a comment on the meet-up page and we’ll try to find someone going your way.  The walk will take an hour to an hour and a half, but allow the two hour window due to any view breaks or general group lag.  This should be fun!  Let’s take a walk!  Contact organizer Dr. Mindy Curry at 503-995-8674 with any questions.
