Healthy Walk and Talk-Springwater Corridor via Sellwood Riverfront Park.
Let's try this one again and hope no repeat thunderous torrential downpour! Sellwood Riverfront Park is a city park of about 7.6 acres in southeast Portland located at Southeast Spokane Street and Oaks Parkway. Formerly a mill site overgrown with Himalayan blackberries, the south half of the park includes a parking lot, the boat launches, dog park, and a large grassy area. The north end of the park is a native-plant wetland and riparian zone featuring marsh plants and willows. A formal path winds through the wetland, an informal path follows the river bank north toward Oaks Amusement Park, and running parallel along the east side of the park is the Springwater Corridor which links the park to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, downtown Portland and the amusement park.
Let’s meet in the parking lot near the restrooms at Noon-2PM on Sunday November 23, located at Southeast Spokane Street and Oaks Parkway. We will walk above the park along the flat paved Springwater Corridor. This multi-use path (shared with bicyclists) features spectacular views of both the Willamette River and Oaks Bottom wetlands. If it isn’t too wet, we’ll take a winding dirt path through the woods near the shore part of the way back (small rolling hills only). This little forest hides inspirational rock art features worth touching. We will also be able to view the uplifting Mausoleum Mural featuring local animals.
This month’s healthy walk topic will be stress: identifying lifestyle factors, associated problems and ways to recover. Bring your favorite stress relieving tip to share! This walk also has many medicinal plants to potentially identify. This walk is about 3.5 miles long. Drizzle is just part of life, but heavy storms cancel event. Please wear stabilizing active footwear such as sneakers, hiking boots or Tevas. If you want to carpool from some distant part of town, then leave a comment on the Sunday Assembly Portland meet-up page and we’ll try to find someone going your way. The walk will take an hour to an hour and a half, but allow the two hour window due to any view breaks or general group lag. This should be fun! Let’s take a walk!
